Monday Weisblog: A second-generation “friend” hits the bigtime

Follow along closely or you’ll get confused …

Do you have a Facebook account? If you do, you probably have friends who became your friends because they were friends with one of your friends. Then they found you (or you found them) and they became your friends, too. And because they are part of the lives of someone you know, you want good things to happen to them.

Even though it isn’t through Facebook., that is what I think about Raquel Houghton. Never met her in person; she probably doesn’t know who I am unless her stepdad told her she was going to be the subject of a blog.

Raquel is a current contestant on American Idol. Her stepfather is Russ Stacey, with whom I worked in the late 1990s at a now-defunct company called “Advertising on Hold.” We recently got re-acquainted through social networking – and since then, he’s gotten the exciting news about his stepdaughter.

Here’s what Russ has told me about Raquel: She was born in Costa Rica and came to the United States (Albany, NY) at the age of three. Russ married Raquel’s mom when Raquel was 13.

“She played the violin in high school and was always singing around the house,” Russ reports to me. “She’s a natural.”

She spent her senior year at Edgewater High here in Central Florida, and eventually moved to Los Angeles at 23 to pursue a singing career. She’s auditioning for movie and modeling roles, as well, and recently landed a print ad for the Ford Motor Company. “But it’s been her dream to be on American Idol,” Russ told me.

How cool is that?!

I’ll be the first to admit that I am not a fan of the show, and the only enjoyment I get out of it is seeing highlights of the judges’ neurotic behavior on The Soup. But this season I’ll be tuning in from time to time, hoping to see what’s happening with Raquel.

Best of luck, Raquel; and congrats to Russ, who must be an exceptionally proud stepdad these days!
